Simons Student Policy Research Program

The Simons Centre for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Research is pleased to announce the renewal of the Simons Student Policy Research Program in Peace and Disarmament. This program is intended to advance the understanding of disarmament and arms control issues among UBC students and to encourage attention to policy strategies to advance their resolution. This year the Simons Centre for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Research is partnering with the International Relations Students Association, which will publish the most meritorious papers by Research Associates in the UBC Journal of International Affairs (JIA).

Safeguarding Space Security: Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space

Co-organized by The People’s Republic of China, The Russian Federation, the Simons Centre for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Research, and the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research, with the financial support of The People’s Republic of China and The Simons Foundation, the ”Safeguarding Space Security: Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space“ conference was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on 21-22 March 2005.

Nuclear Cooperation with India

On November 22, 2005, the Simons Centre for Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Research convened a one-day conference on ”Nuclear Cooperation with India“ to seek new insights into these issues.

The conference gathered a diverse group of specialists to discuss the political and technical consequences of the recent initiatives. The presentations and discussion considered the merits of the specific terms of the US-India arrangement, Canadian policy responses, the direct impact on the NPT regime, and the potential broader consequences for non-proliferation efforts worldwide.

This volume documents the proceedings of the conference. It includes an introduction, texts of each presentation, a summary of the ensuing discussions, and a concluding essay. The volume also includes supplementary background material and a current bibliography.

Simons Student Policy Research Program 2005/06

The Simons Centre for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Research is pleased to announce those selected to participate in the Simons Student Policy Research Program in Peace and Disarmament for 2005/06.

This program is intended to advance the understanding of disarmament and arms control issues among UBC students and to encourage attention to policy strategies to advance their resolution. All full time UBC graduate students or undergraduate students of at least third year standing are eligible to apply.

The students selected for participation in this program have been designated Simons Centre Student Disarmament Research Associates and will produce a policy-relevant paper on a specified topic. Upon satisfactory completion, the Student Research Associates will be paid the sum of $1,000.00 for their paper.

Partners in Peace: Jordanian and Israeli Dialogue

On November 21, the Liu Institute and the Faculty of Graduate Studies, UBC, hosted a unique dialogue on Middle East issues with His Excellency Nabil Barto, Jordanian Ambassador to Canada, and His Excellency Alan Baker, Israeli Ambassador to Canada. The Simons Centre for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Research was pleased to sponsor this event.
