The Centre of International Relations is a research Centre within the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of British Columbia. Its purpose is to facilitate internationally oriented interdisciplinary research and curricula among the faculty and students of UBC and other institutions, in Canada and abroad. The Centre seeks to advance its mandate by:
Coordinating research programs;
Fostering informed debate, bringing theory and practice together;
Providing opportunities for students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty;
Disseminating the results of faculty and student research; and
Collaborating with others at UBC, in Canada and abroad.
The Centre of International Relations has a long tradition of academic and research work, with several ongoing projects and sponsorship of seminars, lectures, conferences and workshops. It also hosts networks including the Canadian Consortium on Human Security (CCHS), Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP) and the Canadian Consortium on Asia Pacific Security (CANCAPS). Within CIR’s mandate is the promotion of scholarly output; sponsorship of academically focused projects and related events; mentoring of MA and PhD students and Postdoctoral Fellows; hosting of visiting scholars; and developing curriculum and graduate programs. Its work has substantial focus on human security issues, Canadian foreign and security policy and on global regimes and institutions. Its work in these areas leads to the production of several journal articles and the Working Paper series of publications.
